Rigging Cartoon Faces Part 4: Auto Chew

I was working on a talking pig commercial where the character chews and talks. The animator requested some type of control. I made one very small change to my hierarchy to achieve it.


If you keep the muzzle and jaw unparented from each other you can manually control them individually. Looks like this, apologies for messy nodes.



I have a remap node to drive it if the jaw moves up past a certain point. I have a blend to turn it off and on. Animator prefers it off, but works a dream for chewing and talking animations. Again hit me up, if you want me to explain the system in full. Jason
