Deformers: Making blend shapes

jasondobra

Recently finished doing some blend shape work on a character. In which we used the automated software to create facial animation.

I often use the deformers in Maya to create facial blendshapes.

In this example i will use the wire deformer tool.

  • First duplicating the mesh

  • I used the convert edges to curve to create a new curve

  • "You can reduce the amount to make it easier to control the shapes, "In this case i use 3 cubic and 12 cvs"

  • I use the wire deformer to deform the new mesh.

  • I paint the wire paints

  • I use the options to eliminate any issues through rotation being left on.

  • I then use the deformer relationship editor to connect the eyebrows and any other geometry that needs to follow along.

The beauty of this setup is you can use the blend shape targets on the wired curve. Its completely non destructive workflow. Lastly extract the shapes and create blend shapes on the target meshes.

This saved me a lot of time, Again if you need any help let me know. Jason
